Issues Adolescents Face
Adolescence is the period of time in which children grow further and start to take on adult responsibilities. This process includes physical changes, or puberty, and changes in dynamics and roles with other people within families, schools and other social contexts.
“Adolescence is a wider concept that encompasses the time and terrain that includes puberty and the social, emotional, and wider psychological changes that characterize the chronological transition from childhood to adulthood.”
(Susman and Dorn, 2009)
Immigrant parents should understand some of the issues adolescents commonly face. Adolescents of immigrant families may have a harder time transitioning into adulthood given that they have at least two sets of beliefs of what a successful adult should be: on one hand their parents’ and origin country view and on the other hand, the receiving country’s perspective.
